shine/lighthouse

Some say we are to let our light shine
like a lighthouse
as if the light is what makes it beautiful
but not to me.
a lighthouse doesn't shine just to shine
for its own sake.

The beauty of a lighthouse lies not in the light
but the location.
the wonder is not in the gleam
but that it is there at all.
A lighthouse is not a beacon of hope
but a warning.

They shine where others cannot go
standing where water, wind and earth meet
in places more dangerous
than most can withstand

They don't shine to let others in
they shine to warn others away
they say "you can't stand where I am standing,
you cannot do what I am doing."

So, be a lighthouse
amidst the turmoil of it all
stand on the rocks
and shine
but do it because you are doing something good
something worthwhile
something that others can't
be strong like a lighthouse
but be willing to pay the price

To be a lighthouse is to be alone
to stand against the odds
to do what must be done.
That is what a lighthouse does
and yet it does so
nonetheless.
